Last year, an eight minute live-action trailer called “Mortal Kombat: Rebirth” surfaced on YouTube and took the Internet by storm. Everyone thought it was a was a viral ad for a new game or an early look at a reboot of the “Mortal Kombat” movie franchise. The truth was that the video was intended for use in a pitch to Warner Bros executives and it was unintentionally leaked. The film never came to pass as Warner Bros had no plans for a movie.
The director of the viral video, Kevin Tancharoen (Fame), didn’t get the movie deal but instead he got a nod of approval to turn his viral video into a ten episode web series to promote the latest Mortal Kombat game. The web series premieres today on the popular YouTube channel Machinima.
Machinima specializes in gaming content and it is the 6th most subscribed to YouTube channel of all-time. So, even though Tancharoen didn’t get a movie deal, he still gets to show off his work to a massive audience.
