Motorola RAZR MAXX: Where Does It Stand?

Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX

Motorola’s flagship phone the RAZR Maxx looks pretty solid and could do pretty well against other brands like the Samsung Galaxy S2 or the HTC One X.

But where does it exactly stand among the top flagship phones in the market? Let’s find out:

Hardware

The phone looks heavy from afar because of its metallic design, but it is actually made of durable plastic with a grey chrome finish for that metallic look. So it is kind of weird handling it initially because you will be expecting a heavier phone than what you are holding.

Display and Interface

The phone has a 4.3inch Super Amoled Advanced display that is topped by Gorilla glass. What’s nice about the screen is that even with sunlight, the screen is still very clear. In comparison with the S3 and the One X, though, 256ppi is a little short of what we were expecting.

The UI was running on Android Gingerbread out of the box, but there was a quick prompt about the Ice Cream Sandwich OTA update. The nice thing about this UI is that there are not much unnecessary features and apps, and just stuck with the useful ones like the Citrix powered apps and Motorola’s own Smart Action app.

Performance

Its dual core processor is, of course, not as fast as the Quad core processors of the OneX or the S3, but it is fast enough that there are no lags. UI transitions are all fast and smooth as well. This phone probably beats Samsung Galaxy S2 in speed but falls short of the Galaxy Nexus.

Call quality

This phone probably has the best call quality that I have encountered in a while. Even VoIP calls through RingCentral virtual extensions are very clear, even outdoors. Just by the call quality, this is a great phone in my book already.

Battery Life

Another standout quality of this phone is its battery life. It is using 3300 mAH battery that can probably last up to three days with moderate use. For all the speed that the S3 and the One X has, their battery life is something that was not able to catch up. It seems Motorola has them beat on sheer battery life, which is a big plus for business users.

Camera

Like the S3 and the One X, the RAZR Maxx also features an 8 megapixel camera. It takes crisp pictures as long as it is taken with adequate lighting. Pictures taken indoors may suffer a bit, but that is where the LED flash comes in.

Other features

As said above, it has great Citrix powered apps that allows you to stay connected to your company and the Smart Action app allows you to automate some of the phone’s actions. I predict that Motoblur will be popular to users once they start on the social networking apps. The RAZR Maxx also allows for file-s syncing through MotoCast.

Verdict

Though not quad core, it is still a fast and reliable phone with great features. The excellent call quality and long battery life alone will endear it to business users.
