China has unveiled its own web search engine called Jike on June 20, 2011 in Beijing. It’s the product of the the state-owned newspaper People’s Daily, and it is China’s biggest attempt yet to enter the commercial internet space. The site was initially named as Goso, and then renamed Jike in an effort to make it more appealing to the young internet users. The search engine will compete directly with the local market leader Baidu and Google, which is currently at distant second.
